In 2016 – 17 we investigated the possibility of a community buy-out for the hydro electric scheme at nenthead Mines.
Unfortunately, at the time, we couldn’t make the finances work out well enough to be confident that the scheme would make a surplus for the community.
However, we have now identified a number of possible business models for progressing the scheme, and are working to progress these as part of a project funded by WRAP’s Rural Community Energy Fund and Electricty North West’s Powering Our Communities fund. More information on this will be posted shortly.
Rural Community Energy Fund (RCEF)
RCEF is a £15 million programme, delivered by WRAP and jointly funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (DBEIS). It supports rural communities in England to develop renewable energy projects which provide economic and social benefits to the community.
